This morning, enjoy an excursion to the historic Yumbulakhang Palace, located about 12 km (7 miles) south of Tsetang in the beautiful Yarlung Valley. Perched atop a hill overlooking the fertile plains below, Yumbulakhang is traditionally regarded as the first palace ever built in Tibet. According to Tibetan history, it was established by King Nyatri Tsenpo, the first king of Tibet, making it one of the country’s most significant historical landmarks.
The palace features two distinct sections: a three-story front building and a fortress-like tower at the rear. Inside are revered statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, King Nyatri Tsenpo, King Songtsen Gampo, and several early Tibetan rulers. Although the original structure was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, it was faithfully reconstructed in 1982, preserving its traditional architectural style and cultural importance. Important Notes
•Tibet’s altitude ranges from approximately 3,100 m to over 5,000 m, so temperatures can change rapidly. Layered clothing is the best choice.
•The sun at high altitude is much stronger than at sea level. Always carry sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.
•Drink plenty of water throughout the trip to stay well hydrated and help your body acclimatize to the altitude.
•Pack light but ensure you have enough warm clothing, especially if traveling from October to April.
