This historic royal palace complex is an open-air museum filled with ancient temples, courtyards, shrines, and the old palace of the Malla Kings who once ruled Kathmandu Valley. You will also visit the famous Kumari House, home to the Living Goddess Kumari, where visitors may catch a glimpse of her from the palace window during special moments. The ancient royal palace, known as Hanuman Dhoka, stands beside the statue of the Monkey God Hanuman, the guardian deity of the palace entrance. The courtyard was once used for the coronation ceremonies of Nepalese kings. Nearby, you can also see the impressive statue of Kal Bhairab, the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, along with several beautifully carved temples and historical monuments.
The tour continues to Swayambhunath, famously known as the Monkey Temple, one of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist stupas in Nepal with a history of more than 2,500 years. Situated on a hilltop overlooking Kathmandu Valley, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers stunning panoramic views of the city. The stupa beautifully blends both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, featuring colorful prayer flags, prayer wheels, monasteries, chaityas, and ancient stone carvings. The peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by the scent of incense and butter lamps while devotees walk around the stupa spinning prayer wheels as part of their spiritual rituals. Even after the devastating 2015 earthquake, this iconic monument remained standing and continues to be one of Kathmandu’s most beloved spiritual landmarks.
Later, visit the artistic city of Patan Durbar Square, another UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exceptional Newari art, architecture, and craftsmanship. Officially known as Lalitpur, the city is famous for traditional metal, stone, and terracotta art. The ancient royal palace complex features elegant courtyards, intricately carved temples, golden windows, and impressive monuments dedicated to Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Highlights include the beautiful Krishna Temple, Shiva temples, and the famous Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahabihar), surrounded by peaceful monasteries and charming courtyards that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.
